The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, Tanzania, is helping the Government of Tanzania to provide refugee asylum and a permanent solution.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
UNHCR works with the Ministry of internal affairs as well as other government ministries to provide assistance to struggling people. In addition to working with other humanitarian partners, UNHCR works closely with UN agencies through the UN Development Assistance Programme as well as the Kigoma UN Joint Programme, aimed at supporting refugees and their host communities as well as strengthening the relationship between humanitarian initiatives and development, in line with the International Convention on refugees.
As of 1 January 2022, Tanzania hosts more than 246,000 refugees and asylum seekers, most of them from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Of these, 83% live in Ndutu and Nyarugusu refugee camps in the northwestern region of Kigoma.
