The NBC bank began it’s operations in 1967 when the Tanzanian government declared itself in all financial institutions including Banks.
In 1991 the bank sector was rehabilitated and six years later, in 2000 the south African financial services group Absa group limited acquired a majority stake in NBC.
The government of Tanzania owns 30 percent of the shares and the international monetary fund which is a member of the world bank accounts for 15 percent of the shares in the bank. It is now known as NBC limited.
