The Tanzania wildlife management authority (TAWA) was founded in 2014 through establishment of the GN. Number 135 which was released on may 9th 2014. Tanzania wildlife management authority was founded with the aim of ensuring the responsibilities of wildlife management is initially carried out by the wildlife department of the ministry of natural resources and tourism.
The authority is an authorized body to protect and manage wildlife resources outside the national parks and Ngorongoro conservation area. Tanzania wildlife management authority is authorized to enforce the wildlife conservation act number 5 of 2009 and to follow regulations to ensure that wildlife resources are available outside NCAA and TANAPA are well maintained in response to the rapid rise in wildlife crime including illegal ivory trafficking, poaching, rhino ivory and other animal products experienced in Tanzania that lead to decline results in wildlife populations particularly of Africa elephants.
Tanzania wildlife management authority is striving to strengthen law enforcement by making anti poaching patrols, protection of humans and their sets against animal problem, strengthening of law enforcement that are basing on wildlife management by conducting trophy checks in entry and exit points to prevent poaching and illegal ivory trafficking.
